Description & Learning objectives

This course has been designed to help professionals across all areas of children’s care understand and respond more effectively to behaviours that challenge. It provides a foundation of knowledge, insight, and practical tools that can be applied in fostering, residential settings, leaving care services, and wider children’s services. By exploring the emotional roots of behaviour and learning how to respond with empathy, consistency, and confidence, learners will be able to create safer and more supportive environments for children and young people.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Understand what is meant by behaviours that challenge and how these behaviours can be linked to unmet emotional or psychological needs.
  • Recognise the impact of trauma, attachment disruption, and early life experiences on children’s behaviour and communication.
  • Apply trauma-informed strategies to respond calmly, safely, and consistently to challenging situations in a range of care settings.
  • Identify early warning signs and triggers that may lead to challenging behaviour, and use proactive approaches to prevent escalation.
  • Respond in ways that build trust, preserve dignity, and promote emotional growth and positive relationships for children and young people.

This course is CPD accredited and adheres to the training, support and development standards outlined in The Fostering Services (England) Regulations 2011.
It is also tailored to where you live in the UK, adhering to each country’s own individual regulators – namely: Ofsted, The Care Inspectorate (Wales), The Care Inspectorate (Scotland), and The Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (Northern Ireland).
If you work within the foster care sector, this course will give you the required learning outcomes to be competent in your chosen subject area.
Because each of our courses is created by a specialist within this sector, we have the expertise to tailor any course to your specific needs. You can even arrange for your own documentation policies or procedures to be included in your Learning Management System.
To discuss these options before making your booking, or to ask any other questions, please just get in touch via our live chat.
This course is intended for personal development only and does not provide a regulated qualification.
