Description & Learning objectives

This course introduces the key principles and practical approaches involved in care planning and permanence for children and young people who are unable to live with their birth families. It explores how thoughtful assessment, collaborative decision-making, and consistent support can help children experience stability, security, and positive relationships. Learners will develop an understanding of how care plans guide professional practice, how permanence decisions shape long-term outcomes, and how trauma-informed approaches support children who have experienced disruption or loss. The course combines foundational knowledge with practical examples to help professionals apply these ideas confidently in everyday work with children and young people.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the purpose and key principles of care planning and permanence for children and young people in care.
  • Recognise how stability, relationships, and consistent support influence children’s wellbeing and development.
  • Identify the roles and responsibilities of professionals involved in planning and reviewing care arrangements.
  • Apply trauma-informed and child-centred approaches when contributing to care planning decisions.
  • Respond to changes in children’s circumstances by supporting plans that promote long-term stability and positive outcomes.
