Description & Learning objectives

Child sexual exploitation is a complex form of abuse that can affect children and young people from any background, culture, community, or circumstance. Professionals working with children and young people may encounter situations where exploitation is hidden, misunderstood, or difficult to identify. This course has been designed to build knowledge, confidence, and practical skills so that learners can recognise concerns, understand risks, and respond appropriately when safeguarding issues arise. Throughout the course, you will explore how exploitation develops, the factors that may increase vulnerability, the warning signs that professionals should be aware of, and the interventions that can help protect and support children and young people. The course also promotes a trauma-informed approach that recognises the impact of abuse while encouraging compassionate, effective, and child-centred practice.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Understand what child sexual exploitation is, including how exploitation develops, the methods used by perpetrators, the grooming process, and the impact exploitation can have on children and young people.
  • Recognise the signs, indicators, risk factors, and vulnerabilities that may suggest a child or young person is experiencing, or is at risk of experiencing, child sexual exploitation.
  • Identify how professional curiosity, relationship-based practice, and early intervention can help prevent harm, support disclosure, and improve outcomes for children and young people.
  • Respond to concerns about child sexual exploitation using a trauma-informed, child-centred approach, including appropriate recording, information sharing, safeguarding actions, and multi-agency working.
  • Apply practical strategies to support children and young people affected by exploitation, recognise the emotional impact on those involved, and use reflective practice to strengthen professional decision-making and safeguarding responses.

This course is CPD accredited and is specifically for anyone working within Children’s Services.
