Description & Learning objectives

This course introduces the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to understand and apply the principles of Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) within the children looked-after sector. It is designed for professionals across all care settings — fostering, residential care, leaving care, and children’s services — providing a clear foundation for recognising when restrictions may impact a child’s liberty and how to respond lawfully, sensitively, and effectively. By completing this Level 2 course, learners will be able to reflect on their own professional practice, understand the purpose and process of DoLS, and contribute to a culture where safety and freedom are held in balance. The course promotes trauma-informed, rights-based care across the UK, helping professionals build confidence in their decision-making and uphold the dignity of every child and young person.

After completing this course, learners will be able to:

  • Understand what is meant by a deprivation of liberty and how it relates to safeguarding.
  • Recognise situations where restrictions or supervision could become a deprivation of liberty.
  • Apply trauma-informed and attachment-aware approaches to ensure that any restrictions are necessary.
  • Identify the roles and responsibilities of professionals in monitoring, reviewing, and communicating.
  • Respond to concerns about liberty restrictions by using reflective practice, professional supervision.

This course is CPD accredited and is specifically for anyone working within Children Services. It is also tailored to where you live in the UK, adhering to each country’s own individual regulators - namely: Ofsted, The Care Inspectorate (Wales), The Care Inspectorate (Scotland), and The Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (Northern Ireland).

If you have 5 or more learners who require this training, you might like to consider our face-to-face option instead.

Because each of our courses is created by a specialist within this sector, we have the expertise to tailor any course to your specific needs. You can even arrange for your own documentation policies or procedures to be included in your Learning Management System.

To discuss these options before making your booking - or to ask any other questions - please just get in touch via our live chat.

This course is intended for personal development only and does not provide a regulated qualification.
