Description & Learning objectives

This course provides a clear and practical introduction to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), focusing on what it is, why it happens, and how it affects children and young people. It is designed to help professionals recognise risks, understand the wider social and cultural context, and respond confidently in safeguarding situations. The course also explores how to manage disclosures, take appropriate action, and support children in a sensitive and trauma-informed way.

By completing this course, you will develop the knowledge and confidence needed to identify concerns early, respond appropriately, and contribute to the protection and wellbeing of children and young people in your care.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand what Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is and why it is considered a serious safeguarding concern
  • Understand the social and cultural factors that can influence the practice of FGM
  • Recognise the signs and indicators that a child may be at risk of or affected by FGM
  • Understand the short-term and long-term health consequences of FGM
  • Be aware of the legal and safeguarding responsibilities related to FGM
  • Understand how to respond safely and appropriately to a disclosure of FGM
  • Know how to take appropriate action if you have concerns about FGM

This course is CPD accredited and adheres to the training, support and development standards outlined in The Fostering Services (England) Regulations 2011. 
It is also tailored to where you live in the UK, adhering to each country’s own individual regulators – namely: Ofsted, The Care Inspectorate (Wales), The Care Inspectorate (Scotland), and The Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (Northern Ireland).
If you work within the foster care sector, this course will give you the required learning outcomes to be competent in your chosen subject area.
