Description & Learning objectives

This course introduces the principles and practical application of life story work in supporting children and young people who have experienced care, disruption, or uncertainty in their early lives. It explains why understanding personal history is essential for identity development, emotional wellbeing, and resilience. The course also explores how professionals can use thoughtful conversations, accurate information, and consistent support to help children understand their experiences safely. By the end of the course, learners will have a clearer understanding of how life story work supports positive outcomes and strengthens trusting relationships with children and young people.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the purpose and value of life story work in supporting children and young people to develop a clear sense of identity and belonging.
  • Recognise how past experiences, relationships, and changes in care can affect a child’s understanding of their life story.
  • Identify the key components of effective life story work and the role professionals play in supporting it.
  • Apply practical approaches to supporting children and young people to explore their history in a safe and sensitive way.
  • Respond to children’s questions and emotions about their past using trauma-informed communication and supportive relationships.
