Description & Learning objectives

This course provides a practical introduction to PACE and its application when supporting children and young people who are looked after. Learners will explore the principles of Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, and Empathy, understand how trauma and attachment experiences can influence behaviour, and develop skills that strengthen relationships and promote emotional safety. The course combines theory, practical examples, reflective learning, and workplace guidance to help professionals apply PACE confidently in everyday practice. By the end of the course, learners will be better equipped to build trust, respond to distress in a supportive way, and contribute to positive outcomes for children and young people.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Understand the meaning, purpose, and key principles of Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, and Empathy (PACE), and how they support positive relationships with children and young people.
  • Recognise how trauma, attachment experiences, emotional wellbeing, and life experiences can influence behaviour, communication, and relationships.
  • Apply PACE principles in everyday practice to build trust, promote emotional safety, strengthen relationships, and support positive outcomes.
  • Identify when behaviour may be communicating unmet emotional needs, and use curiosity and empathy to better understand the experiences behind the behaviour.
  • Respond to challenging situations using trauma-informed, relationship-focused approaches while maintaining consistency, professional self-awareness, and reflective practice.
