Description & Learning objectives

This course introduces Psychological First Aid and explains how it can be used to support children and young people during times of distress or crisis. It focuses on simple, practical actions that help individuals feel safe, calm, and supported. The course also explores how trauma can affect behaviour and emotions, and how professionals can respond in a compassionate, trauma-informed way that promotes recovery, resilience, and wellbeing.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the purpose and principles of Psychological First Aid when supporting children and young people
  • Recognise the emotional and behavioural signs of distress, trauma, and post-traumatic stress in children and young people
  • Apply practical steps of Psychological First Aid to provide calm, safe, and compassionate support in moments of crisis
  • Identify when a child or young person may require additional or specialist mental health support, and understand how to seek appropriate advice
  • Understand the importance of self-awareness, emotional regulation, professional boundaries, and the impact of compassion fatigue and burnout
  • Respond to children and young people in ways that promote safety, trust, and long-term resilience, and reflect on how this links to trauma-informed and attachment-aware practice
