Description & Learning objectives

Child sexual exploitation, as a form of child sexual abuse – causes trauma. When children are harmed and forced into situations of extreme stress, it is likely and rational for them to have a range of extreme reactions. This module takes a trauma-informed, anti-diagnosis approach to the way children are understood after a period of sexual trauma. Professionals will learn about common trauma responses during a sexual offence, after, and during recovery – before moving on to explore common coping mechanisms in children. Coping mechanisms after sexual trauma can often appear maladaptive or can be misunderstood as behavioural problems; this module will provide evidence-based advice and information on how to support children showing signs of sexual trauma.

The main learning objectives of the course are as follows:

  1. To understand the experiences of sexual trauma in children of different ages
  2. To increase understanding of common trauma responses during a sexual offence, after, and during recovery
  3. To explore common coping mechanisms after CSE/A
  4. To increase knowledge of supportive strategies and techniques for children affected by panic, crisis, anxiety, and dissociation
