Description & Learning objectives

Supporting unaccompanied asylum-seeking children requires both compassion and practical skill. This course has been designed to build confidence, knowledge, and reflective practice for professionals across all UK care sectors. You will explore the emotional, cultural, and developmental needs of children who arrive in the UK alone—often after experiencing loss, trauma, or instability. Through plain-English explanations, real examples, and reflective activities, you will learn how to respond with understanding and consistency across different care settings.

The learning objectives are as follows:

  • Understand the emotional, psychological, and cultural needs of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and how these influence their adjustment to life in the UK.
  • Recognise how trauma, attachment disruption, and migration experiences can affect behaviour, relationships, and daily functioning in care and support settings.
  • Apply trauma-informed and attachment-aware approaches that promote safety, trust, and emotional recovery in children and young people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Identify practical strategies to support inclusion, communication, and cultural sensitivity when working with unaccompanied asylum-seeking children.
  • Respond to signs of distress, fear, or withdrawal in ways that prioritise safety, dignity, and respect, fostering resilience and confidence in young people.

This course is CPD accredited and is specifically for anyone working within Children’s Services.

It is also tailored to where you live in the UK, adhering to each country’s own individual regulators – namely: Ofsted, The Care Inspectorate (Wales), The Care Inspectorate (Scotland), and The Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (Northern Ireland).
